Massimo Bergamasco
Full Professor of Applied Mechanics

Massimo Bergamasco is Full Professor of Applied Mechanics at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy, where he teaches Mechanics of Robots, Geometry of Motion in Mechanical and Biological Systems, and Virtual Environments. He studies how humans are able to learn and perform complex manual tasks. Such a study spans from Biomechanics, Neuroscience and Mind Science and includes new technological developments in terms of robotics systems, haptic interfaces and virtual environments. He founded the Perceptual Robotics Laboratory PERCRO. He is the coordinator of the ENACTIVE Network of Excellence which aim was the development of Enactive Interfaces and of the SKILLS Integrated Project funded by the European Union in the framework of the 6th Framework Programme.

Roberto Sgherri
Vice President Products and Technologies OTO Melara

Roberto Sgherri is Senior Vice President responsible for Products&Tecnologies of Oto Melara S.p.a., a FINMECCANICA Group defence industry.
He took part and he was responsible for several international and NATO studies about defence and civilian fields and recently he is involved in counter-terrorism studies.
In 1975 he graduated cum laude and dignità di stampa in Electronic Engineering with a thesis in state solid physics at Genoa University where he developed research activities and made publications in several fields, semiconductor physics, information and computer technologies and robotics.
In his company/business career he carried out design activities in missile, artillery and intelligent ammunition fields for those he made research in advanced materials, electronic, automation, robotics and electromagnetic field in anisotropic bodies. He holds some patents.
He is a responsible of Gustavo Stefanini Research Center, a result of the cooperation between Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna Pisa and OTO Melara S.p.a.

Carlo Alberto Avizzano
Assistant Professor of Mechatronics

Carlo Alberto Avizzano (Eng., PhD) is the Coordinator of PERCRO Laboratory. He is also external Professor with University of Pisa at the Faculty of Engineering where he teaches the course of Mechatronics. His research activities deal with intelligent robot controllers including autonomous robot as well as human interfaces. Main application fields include: reactive robots, desktop haptics, mobile robotics, simulators, technological aids, multimodal augmented tele-learning, design of virtual behaviours and information landscapes. During his research activities, he has collaborated/coordinated several EU and National projects. Currently, he participates to the activities of INTUITION NoE, SKILLS IP and ENACTIVE NoE, where he is the Joint Research Activities leader on Application. Furthermore, Carlo Alberto Avizzano has been author of more than 120 papers published on International Journals and proceedings of scientific workshops. He has been author of 3 different patents and 2 different software copyrights. Carlo Alberto Avizzano has been appointed as General Chair for the forthcoming 19th IEEE RO-MAN 2010 Symposium. He is associated editor of several international boards and journals: IROS, ICRA, IJRR, ISPR, Presence, ToH, to name a few. Carlo Alberto Avizzano is also member of the steering boards of some Societies on Robotics and Virtual Environments such as: EIES and MIMOS.
